Increase in Dengue Fever Cases in Rawalpindi

There is a rising threat of an outbreak of dengue fever in the district after confirmation of a few positive cases by the National Institute of Health (NIH), Islamabad, and a number of cases by private laboratories, health experts told The News on Friday. 

The confirmation of positive cases recently has proven the existence of vector aedes aegypti , which causes dengue fever in scattered parts of the district.

Dengue shows itself in the shape of high fever, severe headaches, extreme joint and muscle pain also called break-bone fever, nausea, vomiting and rash along with complications in respiration. A few victims develop dengue hemorrhagic fever bleeding from nose, gums and under the skin causing purplish bruises. The DHF is fatal in 5% of the cases. Then there is Dengue Shock Syndrome (DSS) that can lead to circulatory failure. About 10% of such cases can be fatal. Experts say that in case of high fever with bleeding symptoms, patients should immediately rush to the nearest hospital.

2413 Cases of Dangue Fever in Pakistan

National Health Department reported that 2413 dengue cases have been confirmed across the country, fearing the toll could be rise in days to come.

According to the National Health Department's report, total 2708 dengue patients have been admitted so far and dengue virus has been confirmed in 2413 cases.

In Punjab, 2170 dengue cases have been confirmed and 28 cases have been reported from Islamabad. The report further disclosed that 26 dengue cases were registered from Rawalpindi while 176 cases were registered in Sindh.

Moreover, 8 dengue cases were confirmed in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and 5 cases were reported in AJK. According to the report, so far 5 people died due to dengue fever.

Meanwhile, 33 more patients of dengue fever have been reported in Rawalpindi and Islamabad. These patients are being treated at PIMS and Poly Clinic Hospital Islamabad. Furthermore, state of emergency has been declared at all hospitals in twin cities.
